John Choi, president of the Asian Firefighters Association, presented the group's history, mission and activities to the Fire Commission on Aug. 12. Choi said AFA membership is roughly 120 and described coordination with other employee groups and union affiliates for community events and recruiting. He noted the federal consent decree in 1988 as historical context for diversity work in the department and urged continued efforts to make the department reflect the city's demographics.
Commissioners praised the presentation and asked about nonprofit status and fundraising; Choi said the AFA is a tax-exempt nonprofit and has received modest support from related employee groups for events but has not solicited direct donations from businesses. No formal action followed the presentation.
