Fire Commission approves capital budget requests; staff outline projects and bond planning

The Fire Commission approved the San Francisco Fire Department—s capital budget requests during its Jan. 8 meeting, moving the item after a presentation by Director Mark Corso on timing and priorities.
Corso explained capital requests are due to the mayor—s office and capital planning committee by Jan. 17; that committee vets requests in April and May and incorporates selected projects into the mayor—s June 1 submission to the Board of Supervisors. He said the department—s current capital allocation is approximately $2.9 million, with about $1.7 million allocated for preplanning the bond measure identified in the presentation as the "Easter bond." Projects prioritized included roofs and exterior envelopes, HVAC and mechanical upgrades, generators and exhaust extractors, electrical and data infrastructure, apparatus-bay doors, boiler maintenance and studies of department facilities.
Commissioners asked how project priorities and cost estimates are set. Corso said estimates rely on Department of Public Works assessments, prior comparable work and in-house cost assumptions. He said station upgrades completed during bond programs are often reimbursed by the bond if the bond measure later passes.
Vice President Francie Covington moved to approve the items as submitted; Commissioner Ken Cleveland seconded. The motion carried with unanimous "aye" votes.
The presentation referenced Station 35 (an ambulance deployment facility) as part of the bond planning and noted ongoing coordination with Public Works and the Controller on transparency tools for departmental budgets.
