Deputy administration Jose Veil presented a broad administrative update covering training and facility developments. Veil said committees had submitted annual work plans that will be posted online, incident management team development and drills are planned, and active-shooter and LRV (light-rail vehicle) rescue training have been conducted; 257 members took active-shooter training in July.
Veil reported the reserve academy graduation of 29 members and said 120 fourth-class recruits completed one year of testing and will move to new assignments. He said a balancing-tour project aims to reduce overtime by stabilizing tour assignments and noted a Station 49 vacancy bid will occur on Sept. 4 with input from EMS personnel.
Chief Nicholson discussed facility projects including engagement with the Department of Real Estate and a broker to explore training-center land and showed the commission an artist's proposal for art at the new Station 49 that will go to the Arts Commission. Nicholson also noted equipment updates: new engine procurement is in a preconstruction or inspection phase and the department is evaluating battery-operated fans and rescue tools to reduce emissions and improve field safety.
No formal vote or budget adoption occurred at the meeting; commissioners thanked staff and asked for documentation to be shared as it becomes available.
