Fire Commission honors Chief Hayes White, hears department reports on academies, greater alarms and station projects

Chief Hayes White delivered the Chief of Department report: staff are coordinating with the Mayor’s Office on the upcoming balanced budget, training academies are underway (Class 125, with follow‑on classes planned) and the department’s training division was reaccredited by State Fire Training for five years. She also highlighted outreach events and memorials for recently deceased retired members.
Deputy Chief Mark Gonzales delivered operations highlights: the department responded to three greater‑alarm incidents in March, including complex multi‑structure fires and a coastal rescue that involved the U.S. Coast Guard; in one Fillmore incident five victims required treatment. Gonzales praised fire reserves and field crews and noted increases in calls to the department’s stress unit.
Commissioners congratulated staff on the accreditation, discussed the Station 5 rebuild schedule and commended personnel for operational responsiveness. The commission closed public comment on both reports with no speakers.
Next steps: commissioners asked to receive periodic updates on Station 13 and Station 5 projects and to get notice of major operational or staffing impacts.
