Fire Commission adopts 2019 statement of purpose and elects new officers

At the Jan. 9 meeting the Fire Commission adopted its 2019 annual statement of purpose and completed its election of officers for the coming term.
Commissioner Francie Covington read the statement of purpose into the record; it reaffirms the commission’s responsibilities to ensure the department carries out its mission to protect life and property, to promote fiscal responsibility, to encourage recruitment that reflects city diversity, and to support health, wellness and training initiatives. The commission voted unanimously to adopt the statement.
The commission then conducted nominations and votes for leadership. President Ken Cleveland nominated Vice President Steven Nicasio as president; the nomination was seconded and approved by the commissioners. Commissioner Covington was nominated and elected vice president. Commissioners used the hour to outline priorities for the coming year including expanded wellness and cancer‑prevention initiatives, peer support programs, institutionalizing reserves and promoting private funding for station needs.
The commission also reviewed correspondence and reported on ongoing work related to the chief selection process and upcoming closed‑session personnel matters.
