Fire Commission approves minutes and a three-day paid leave for chief to attend NFPA forum

The San Francisco Fire Commission voted unanimously to approve its minutes from Aug. 8, 2018, and to grant Chief of Department Joanne Hayes White three days paid leave to attend the National Fire Protection Association's 2018 Urban Fire Forum in Quincy, Massachusetts.
President Cleveland called for a motion to approve the minutes, which Commissioner Hartman moved and Vice President Acasio seconded; commissioners then voted "aye" and the minutes were adopted. Later in the meeting Chief Hayes White sought the commission's authorization to be absent Sept. 19'21 to attend the NFPA conference. "The National Fire Protection Agency will cover the expense of travel, meals and lodging," the chief said, adding that "no Fire Department funds will be used for this trip." She also named Deputy Chief Mark Gonzales as acting chief during her absence.
Commissioners discussed the conference briefly; Commissioner Francie Covington and others praised the learning opportunities the forum offers and commissioners approved the request without objection. The approvals were procedural actions taken at the start of the meeting; no dissent or abstentions were recorded.
The commission moved on to the chief's departmental report following both votes.
