Commissioners press for fixes at Station 8 and get updates on Station 35 permit, Station 5 work

SAN FRANCISCO — The Fire Commission pressed department staff on station projects and property repairs during its May 23 meeting, receiving updates on a major permit milestone for Station 35, construction progress at Station 5, early work at an Ambulance Deployment Facility (ADF) and a continuing dispute over a damaged side yard at Station 8.
Deputy Chief Janine Nicholson said the city has an important Station 35 permit meeting with BCDC on June 11; the meeting is a major step toward permit approval and the department expects to move forward with subsequent permits once BCDC approves the project. Nicholson also reported demolition and abatement work has begun behind Station 9 for the ADF and that Public Works has pulled construction permits and is preparing a contract to go to bid.
Nicholson displayed photos of Station 5 construction and told the commission framing on the second and third floors is underway and rough plumbing and electrical work have begun. She said the department will meet with the contractor on the Station 16 project and will bring further updates after that meeting.
Commissioner Alioto Veronese raised a separate concern about an amenity area (side yard) alongside Station 8 that was damaged during nearby development. Assistant Deputy Chief Tony Rivera said there had been an agreement for the developer to fund repaving and amenities, but that sewage and drainage problems were discovered during assessment and the department is actively working with the developer to reach a resolution. Rivera committed to give the commission monthly progress updates and to provide plans if the developer proposes new landscaping or amenities.
On procurement, Nicholson said the department sent PPE proposals from three vendors to the Office of Contract Administration and that the clothing depot has received three turnout sets to be evaluated over the next 30 days.
Commissioners requested continued monthly briefings on the Station 8 repairs and that staff share proposed plans; Rivera agreed to supply updates and plans to the commission when available.
