The San Francisco Fire Commission voted Oct. 11 to accept and recommend acceptance of a FEMA Fire Prevention & Safety Grant of $215,380 to enhance the department's Youth Fire Center Prevention and Intervention Program.
Mark Corso, finance and planning for the department, presented the grant award: "The federal funding is the amount of $215,380," he said, adding the grant will cover one personnel position for a year plus program materials and supplies. Corso said there is an approximate $11,000 general-fund match that the department will absorb.
Commissioner Francie Covington moved the item and Commissioner Joe Alioto Veronese seconded. The commission voted in favor of accepting the grant; Corso said the project will fund prevention and intervention work addressing fire-setting behaviors among youth and involves the bureau of fire investigation working with schools.
Corso told commissioners the application was coordinated by Fire Prevention Investigation staff, Chief Francisco and involved some contractual assistance in preparing the grant. The commission thanked staff for securing the award and noted the department will move forward with the program enhancements described in the grant application.
The commission's action was recorded as a recommendation that the Board of Supervisors authorize the department to accept and expend the grant funds per the agenda language.
