San Francisco dispatch recognized for helping deliver baby by phone

The Fire Commission on May 24 recognized EMS dispatcher Ryan Wan for his role in guiding a family through the birth of a child over a 911 call.
Rob Smuts, deputy director of the Department of Emergency Management, and Chief Joanne Hayes White presented Wan with a certificate and described the incident as an example of the dispatch center27s critical role. Smuts said Wan has been with the department about seven years and credited him for calm, protocol-driven instructions while waiting for first responders.
"This was an excellent, excellent call, excellent handling of this incident," Smuts said. Chief Hayes White noted the awards ceremony would continue the following day and acknowledged paramedics Irene Ibarra and Daniel Nazaretta who were to receive awards as well. Commissioners thanked Wan and noted his family27s long service to the department, with his father John Juan previously serving in incident support.
Wan offered brief thanks and commissioners said they would come down to shake his hand. The recognition was placed on the record; no formal action or vote accompanied the presentation.
