San Francisco Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes White told the Fire Commission on March 22 the department is 'on track for revenue and expenditure this fiscal year' and outlined upcoming budget and staffing milestones.
Hayes White said the department will present an overview of its budget to the Budget and Finance Committee on April 27; department presentations are planned for the week of June 19 after the mayor submits a balanced budget on June 1. Deputy Director of Finance Mark Corso has been in regular contact with the Mayor's Budget Office, she said.
The chief and administration reported training and recruiting activity: the 120‑first recruit academy is in its 17th week and has passed local and state tests; the department expects to graduate 49 recruits at a ceremony on April 14 at Reardon High School. The second 120 academy is scheduled to start April 24 with a projected 42 seats (including candidates from station 49 and off‑list selections); the department described 35 conditional offers pending medical clearance and several alternates.
Hayes White announced the recent passing of active‑duty firefighter Jalal Aeneb on March 8, and thanked staff and external agencies who assisted with memorial arrangements and a motorcade to Livermore.
Administrative Deputy Chief Ramona Williams provided operational updates: Pump Station 1 construction at Fire Headquarters is nearing completion; Station 5 construction was awarded to Alton Construction with a mid‑April start and tentative completion in summer 2018; Station 16 is two months behind schedule but contractors have begun working weekends at no additional cost. Williams also reported the BOE has received four ambulances in January and is ordering four more; specifications for an aerial ladder truck are near completion and will go to bid.
On personnel classification and labor matters, Deputy Gonzales reported that H23 classification is official and that ongoing discussions with DHR and union representatives aim to fill two positions as part of a bundle of classification changes, with a target to complete the actions by April if negotiations permit.
Commissioners asked for continued emphasis on maintaining academy classes and fleet replacement plans amid budget discussions and requested updates on Station 49 and Treasure Island facility planning at upcoming meetings. The commission closed the meeting after adjournment was moved, seconded and approved.
