Fire Commission honors Coast Guard, Fish and Game and SFFD for Treasure Island bay rescue

The San Francisco Fire Commission on Dec. 14 acknowledged a multi-agency response that, chiefs said, saved a man's life. Chief Joanne Hayes White introduced awards for SFFD Lieutenant Ronald Johansen and paramedic John Drake, Coast Guard members at Station 48 and officers from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife who recovered and stabilized a victim at docks on Treasure Island.
Public Information Officer Jonathan Baxter recounted that Fish and Game wardens saw a splash while monitoring the implosion of part of the Bay Bridge, investigated and retrieved a male victim from the water. He described how the wardens packaged the patient on their vessel, notified Coast Guard staff at the station and had the patient ready for arriving SFFD crews in roughly nine minutes. Baxter highlighted the use of advanced life-saving measures, including a chest decompression, by SFFD medics. "If it wasn't for the efforts of all three of these departments, the man in question would not be alive today," Baxter said.
Captain Tony Serrano of the Port of San Francisco thanked the commission for recognizing the cooperative effort. Commissioners praised the coordination among agencies and presented certificates of appreciation to the individuals on behalf of the San Francisco Fire Department.
Next steps: Commissioners continued to the next agenda item after the recognition; no policy decisions resulted from the presentation.
