Design team gives timeline for new Station 49 ambulance deployment facility; bond funding will follow November

Chief Lombardi and a Department of Public Works project team (Tim Kemp, Jim Bueker, Reggie Stump, Kathleen O'Day) said the site behind Station 9 will replace two light‑construction buildings and create an ambulance deployment and logistics campus. The program estimate presented includes roughly 36,000 square feet of building area and 60,000 square feet of parking for a total program of about 96,000 square feet.
Project staff said the bond passed in June but bond proceeds will not flow until after November (possibly January); the city included interim budget authority to keep the design moving. The schematic‑design team has refined program needs (personnel, vehicles, classrooms, locker rooms and support spaces) and is engaging station 49 staff and logistics personnel to confirm functional adjacencies during design.
Chief Lombardi said the team is aiming to accelerate the schedule and, with DPW priority support, projected an occupancy date in February 2020 rather than an earlier 2021 estimate. Project managers acknowledged the schedule depends on final funding, design approvals, and standard permitting and bidding processes.
Commissioners commended the fast‑tracking, emphasized the importance of involving personnel who will use the facility, and asked the team to continue seeking opportunities to shorten design and procurement timelines without sacrificing quality.
What happens next: DPW will proceed with schematic design, incorporate feedback from station staff, continue outreach, and return to the commission with regular updates as the project advances to design development and construction documents.
