Chief reports budget sign-off, engine purchases and academy schedules

Chief Joanne Hayes White briefed the Fire Commission on departmental activity since Aug. 10 and confirmed the Mayor signed the fiscal-year budget on Aug. 2, clearing the way for equipment purchases and hires funded in the plan. "The budget has been signed and formally approved by the Mayor," Hayes White said.
The department expects to order eight replacement fire engines by the end of the month and reported active recruitment for several newly funded civilian positions. Hayes White said the 120th Recruit Academy is under scheduling review with a projected start in mid-to-late November; the 120th class will follow the current 120th (54 recruits currently in week 10).
The chief and staff also previewed the department150th-anniversary commemorations: a Sept. 11 remembrance across stations, a parade and historical exhibition in Fishermans Wharf on Sept. 24and 25, and a series of public events and open houses tied to Fire Prevention Week Oct. 9through Oct. 15.
Deputy administration reported fleet and procurement activity: nine ambulances ordered; two rescue squads and two aerial trucks to be ordered later in the year; host tender work pending; the new fireboat delivered but not yet formally accepted pending minor repairs. The administration also said in-service training modules have been expanded, including active-shooter training completed for hundreds of members.
Next steps: staff will continue recruitment, finalize academy start dates and advance engine orders; the commission asked staff to provide construction timelines for Station 5 and Station 16 as those projects proceed.
