DBI reports higher projected revenues and details code‑enforcement activity

Department of Building Inspection finance manager Dan Krusher presented the May 2019 finance update on July 17, reporting year‑to‑date operating revenues of $72,600,000 and a projected total operating revenue for the fiscal year of roughly $79,500,000, exceeding the adopted budget ($71,300,000) by about $8.2 million. Projected year‑end expenditures were about $78,200,000, roughly $3.0 million under the $81,200,000 budget.

Krusher also said DBI had issued 33,775 permits through the first 11 months of the fiscal year (about 2% higher than the prior year) with a related valuation of about $4.6 billion (about 11% higher year‑over‑year). He said the final approved FY2019–20 budget would be available in August and shared with the commission then.

Deputy Director Ed Sweeney presented June 2019 code‑enforcement metrics: building inspections performed (5,024), complaints received (435), complaints responded to within 24–72 hours (428), first notices of violation issued (64), abated complaints with NOVs (403), housing inspections performed (926) and other enforcement counts. Sweeney said quarterly outreach continues and staff will provide the next update the following quarter.

During public comment on the director’s report, Kevin Chang thanked staff for refunding erroneous vacant‑building fines for 2114 State Street but said monthly monitoring fees remained unresolved and requested documentation on lien withdrawal and an update on Alvarado and Hopkins.

Commissioners had no immediate requests to change the projections; staff said year‑end figures and the final budget would be brought to the commission when available.
