Commission approves additional funding for Openhouse to support transgender and gender‑nonconforming services

The Department of Disability and Aging Services Commission on Dec. 4 approved a grant modification to add roughly $91,575 (plus a 10% contingency) to an existing contract with Openhouse to provide transgender and gender‑nonconforming services through June 30, 2027.
Masayo Person, Special Projects Manager in DAS’s Office of Community Partnerships, said the additional funding will help pay for outreach connecting trans and gender‑nonconforming people to housing and service referrals and support the Tenderloin Tessie holiday dinners — a long‑running San Francisco tradition serving people experiencing homelessness. “The Tenderloin Testy Holiday Dinners is a San Francisco tradition of serving holiday dinners to on house community members dating back to 1974, making this year the 50 year anniversary of the event,” Person said, emphasizing the event’s role linking attendees to services.
Person said the funds will help sustain three annual dinners (Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter) that attract about 1,000 attendees each time and support outreach and referral efforts targeted to a population disproportionately affected by homelessness and poverty.
Commissioners asked about the source of funds and were told the dollars are from department savings; there were no callers in the public comment queue on the item. The commission moved, seconded and approved the modification by unanimous roll call.
The commission recorded the vote and closed the item; staff said they will continue monitoring implementation and outreach outcomes.
