Commission unanimously OKs multiple emergency nutrition and support grant modifications totaling several million dollars

The San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services Commission unanimously approved a series of grant modifications on May 6 to expand nutrition, delivery and social‑support services during the COVID‑19 pandemic.
Staff explained they packaged items for immediate action because contracting staff were deployed to emergency operations; the modifications provide additional funding to convert congregate meal programs to to‑go or delivery models, expand pantry and delivery services, and support volunteer matching and social‑isolation prevention.
Key approvals (amounts are additional modification requests and include a 10% contingency where noted):
- Families First Coronavirus Response Act funds: acknowledged receipt for City and County use (presented by Michael Zog). Vote: unanimous.
- Bayview Hunters Point Multipurpose Senior Services (ENP congregate meals): additional $270,610, plus 10% contingency (revised total not to exceed $297,671). Vote: unanimous.
- Project Open Hand (congregate meals for adults with disabilities): additional $215,664, plus 10% contingency (revised total not to exceed $237,230). Vote: unanimous. Staff said the provider is shifting to multi‑meal packs so clients can pick up fewer times.
- Project Open Hand (Elder Nutrition Program): additional $618,248, plus 10% contingency (revised total not to exceed $680,072). Vote: unanimous.
- San Francisco‑Marin Food Bank (food assistance): additional $559,603, plus 10% contingency (revised total not to exceed $615,563). Vote: unanimous.
- Self‑Help for the Elderly (ENP congregate meals): additional $434,623, plus 10% contingency (revised total not to exceed $478,085). Vote: unanimous.
- Shanti Project (care navigation and peer support / CERV volunteer program): additional $330,637, plus 10% contingency (revised total not to exceed $363,700). Vote: unanimous.
- Shanti Project (social isolation prevention services): additional $115,000, plus 10% contingency (revised total not to exceed $126,500). Vote: unanimous.
Michael Zog and Mike Dodd explained the funds will support rapid shifts in service delivery and partner capacity, including equipment and logistics for to‑go meals, pantry deliveries and volunteer coordination. The commission did not receive public comments on these items and approved each modification by roll‑call vote.
The commission adjourned after expressing appreciation for staff and community partners' emergency work.
