The American Red Cross and city preparedness teams described relief operations and a surge in public engagement with preparedness resources following the Napa earthquake.
Isabel Flores of the American Red Cross said the organization opened evacuation centers in Napa and Vallejo that transitioned to overnight shelters, staffed three roving integrated care teams, and provided food, water and cleanup materials. Flores said the Red Cross has served 2,470 meals, distributed 1,606 bulk items, provided outreach contacts to 545 individuals, recorded 90 overnight shelter stays and deployed about 200 Red Cross personnel since Sunday.
Alicia Johnson (SF72/Alert SF) described the SF72 campaign and the City72 open-source preparedness materials available for communities. She said the program has seen dramatic increases in social-media reach (reported percentage increases in engagement) and new followers to Alert SF and SF72 platforms, and encouraged residents and departments to sign up for Alert SF and use SF72 resources to plan for the first 72 hours after an emergency.
Mickey Callahan (Human Resources) and Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White urged employees and the public to update disaster kits, complete disaster-service-worker training and consider NERT (Neighborhood Emergency Response Team) classes announced for September and other upcoming sessions. School district representatives said they will conduct a district-wide drill for roughly 56,000 students the following day and will perform after-action reviews.
The council emphasized that daily, local incidents continue even amid regional response needs and that the city must both support neighbors and maintain local preparedness services.
