Commission approves Dignity Fund grants to expand services for transgender older adults

The Department of Disability and Aging Services commission approved two multi-year grants on Friday to expand services for transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) older adults and adults with disabilities.
The commission authorized a grant to Curry Senior Center (01/01/2020 through 06/30/2023) for $353,003 plus 10% contingency (total not to exceed $388,303). DAS staff said Curry will expand an existing TGNC support group and add peer-support programming and four annual TGNC events; the grant is projected to reach at least 30 clients and provide 250 hours of programming annually.
The commission also approved a larger grant to Open House (01/01/2020 through 06/30/2023) for $645,582 plus 10% contingency (total not to exceed $710,140). Open House will partner with organizations including San Francisco Community Health Center/TransThrive, Transgender, Gender Variant and Intersex Justice Project, and St. James Infirmary to offer weekly and monthly support groups, transgenerational luncheons, and a monthly gathering for formerly incarcerated transgender women. Staff estimated Open House would reach at least 75 clients and provide 205 hours annually.
Tiffany (DAS staff) said the grants were informed by the Dignity Fund community needs assessment and stakeholder input. Karen Scollettieri, Open House executive director, thanked DAS and the Dignity Fund and said the organizations will learn from TGNC community members to shape services. Commissioners asked about timing and program start-up; staff said providers are currently recruiting TGNC program staff and that some service delivery is expected in the first half of the fiscal year.
Both motions passed after commissioners voiced support and the chair called for the question.
