Lewin outlined planned programming including a senior leader seminar on the USS Bonhomme Richard, panel discussions with Bay Area mayors on regional cooperation, a moderated session on the business sector’s role in disaster response, and a Humanitarian Assistance Village on the Marina Green showcasing field medical and sheltering practices.
Alicia Johnson, the department’s resilience and recovery manager, announced two events: an Oct. 17 Loma Prieta commemoration and symposium, with FEMA deputy administrator Rich Serino as the keynote (invitation‑only), and the Great California ShakeOut on Oct. 20 at 10:20 a.m. Johnson reported "slightly over 290,000 attendees" already registered for the drill and encouraged departments to help the city reach a target of roughly 375,000 participants.
Diana Vanderberg, special events coordinator, reminded departments the EOC would partially activate for Fleet Week weekend operations and other major events (Italian Heritage Day, Halloween) and asked agencies to send representatives to rehearse WebEOC and event plans.
Council staff emphasized the training and coordination value of these events to improve cross‑agency communication and reduce strain on 9‑1‑1 services during large public gatherings.
