DBI reports strong revenues, projects salary savings and readies space study

DBI's acting chief financial officer, Gail Revels, told the Building Inspection Commission on April 16 that the department's revenue is "currently at 110% of what we expected budgeted for the entire year," and that, based on current trends, DBI is likely to finish the fiscal year about 25–26% over budget in revenue.
Revels said the department expects to realize roughly $4,000,000 in salary savings this year, driven by a combination of new hires not budgeted at top pay steps and several unfilled positions. "That is a combination of a lot of new hires, which aren't necessarily at the top step… and also having some positions that aren't filled yet," she said.
On facilities, Revels previewed a consultants' space study that has identified five options for meeting an estimated need of approximately 30,000 square feet of additional workspace for improved one‑stop services with DBI and the Permit Center. The consultants are expected to return with recommendations at the commission's May meeting and to present the same materials to the capital planning committee before the June budget cycle.
Commissioners asked about whether projections included additional staffing that might be required to enforce new legislation (for example short‑term rental enforcement). Revels said current projections do not incorporate those hires for the current year but that DBI intends to seek additional positions in next year's budget.
No formal action was taken. Commissioners requested additional details on routine housing inspections and HR candidate lists as follow‑ups at the next meeting.
