Commissioners used a standing agenda slot to discuss how the Department of Building Inspection will support enforcement of recently amended short‑term rental rules. The commission did not change policy but asked staff to coordinate closely with Planning as the new enforcement framework is implemented.
Rosemarie Boske, DBI Chief Housing Inspector, explained that the legislation (effective next Thursday for the ordinance and with enforcement components phased in starting Feb. 1) places primary code‑enforcement responsibility with the Planning Department. DBI staff said they have already begun cross‑departmental coordination: DBI will offer training to Planning staff to help them recognize potential housing and building code violations, provide Exela‑based complaint data and transfer packaged case files for active investigations. DBI reported it has about three dozen cases compiled that are ready to hand off to Planning for further action.
Commissioners raised concerns about how the registry and verification will ensure fire‑safe and legal dwelling conditions before units are marketed for short‑term rental; DBI confirmed that routine inspections can be prioritized for buildings with complaints or weak inspection histories but that a universal pre‑rental inspection requirement would require new legislation. The commission voted unanimously to continue the discussion to the call of the chair so Planning can present staffing, registry details and how complaints will be routed operationally.
