Mayor Ed Lee joined United Way of the Bay Area and corporate partners at a public kickoff for the 2014 Summer Jobs Plus initiative, urging employers, nonprofits and city departments to help reach a goal of 7,000 paid jobs and internships for local youth. United Way COO Eric McDonald and CEO Anne Wilson framed the program as targeting the city’s most challenged youth and building employer pipelines. John Daigle was not involved in this event; speakers included Don Bosley of JPMorgan Chase, who said JPMorgan Chase would grant $200,000 to summer youth employment, and David Chu of Starbucks, who announced a commitment of 100 jobs for the coming year. Youth participants also spoke: Elizabeth Kim described how a Matchbridge hiring event led to her barista job and career-path progress; former 49ers linebacker Navarro Bowman urged employers to mentor and hire young people. Organizers reported cumulative pledges of 4,731 at one point during the event and said roughly 2,269 additional paid positions were needed to reach the 7,000 target. Event leaders said they would track progress and hoped to report back with results in September.
