Students and community groups urge SFUSD to recognize Eid as a school holiday

Multiple students, parents and community groups used public comment on April 26 to ask San Francisco Unified School District leaders to put a resolution recognizing Eid on a future board agenda.
Students from Galileo High School, Reading Elementary and other campuses described having to miss school for Eid observance and the academic consequences of catching up on assignments and tests. Several speakers said Muslim families repeatedly requested the district recognize Eid and that delaying consideration felt disrespectful to students and families.
Community groups including the Arab Resource and Organizing Center and Jewish Voice for Peace spoke in support of placing a resolution on the agenda and suggested the district consider one day off to allow families to observe the holiday. UESF also lent its support. Speakers requested the board agendize the matter “ASAP” so the district could announce recognition as early as the coming school year.
Board members noted the public comments and said staff would consider the request. No formal action was taken during the meeting to place an Eid recognition resolution on the agenda.
