The Abatement Appeals Board voted unanimously April 17 to adopt a rule on continuances that conforms to San Francisco Building Code Section 105A.2.6. The adopted language says an advance written request for one continuance for good cause may be granted by the AAB president through the AAB secretary, with concurrence of the parties and the head of the department that issued the original decision.
Board members debated whether the secretary or the president should formally grant short-notice continuances. Commissioner Lee proposed clarifying that continuances be granted "by the AAB president through the AAB secretary," a phrasing staff said preserves logistical flexibility by allowing the secretary to process requests while keeping ultimate control with the president. Staff told the board the Code allows only one continuance for good cause and that any granted continuance may not exceed 60 days.
Supporters of the change said it reduces the need for the full panel to reconvene when parties agree; other commissioners pressed for clear notice rules so members of the public have adequate time to respond when an agendized matter is postponed. The board asked staff to ensure notice practices are followed in last-minute requests.
The board voted to adopt the rule on a roll-call vote.
