The Commission on Community Investment and Infrastructure on April 15 conditionally approved schematic designs for a replacement commercial kitchen at the Hunters Point Shipyard intended to house Eclectic Cookery and other tenant culinary businesses.
Amabelle Acqua Asari, project assistant manager, told the commission that the shipyard redevelopment will demolish most existing buildings and that the replacement kitchen must be completed first so Eclectic Cookery can move in and Building 110 can be demolished to make room for a new artist studio building. She said a relocation consultant (Overland Pacific & Cutler) has been engaged to ensure relocation benefits required under federal and state law are honored.
Scott Madison, an Eclectic Cookery owner, described the business’s three decades of operation on the Shipyard and urged approval. “Eclectic is indisputably the most successful incubator of small food enterprises in the region,” he told the commission, highlighting the kitchen’s role supporting women- and minority-owned microenterprises.
Lennar’s design team and architect said they selected a modular construction approach to meet the tight schedule: start construction in the fall and enable Eclectic to move in by the following February. Staff listed conditions of approval that will be part of the resolution, including submitting color samples, design-development review of outstanding details, review of lighting/security for safety, and provisions to allow the building to tie into a future automated waste collection system.
Public comment included a lengthy list of current and former Eclectic Cookery tenants and community organizations who supported the project, described the kitchen’s incubator role, and urged quick approval. The Citizens’ Advisory Committee chair also expressed institutional support.
The commission approved the schematic designs with conditions on a 4–1 roll-call vote. Staff said a relocation plan and additional design documents will return to the commission later this year, and that notices to vacate will not be issued until the relocation plan has been approved.
