San Francisco Building Inspection Commission moves into closed session to interview DBI director candidates

At a special meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, the San Francisco Building Inspection Commission voted to convene a closed session to interview candidates for director of the Department of Building Inspection. "I move that we, convene in closed session," an unidentified commissioner said during the meeting, and commissioners present voted "Aye" to carry the motion.

The commission opened the meeting with a roll call that recorded President McCarthy, Vice President Marr, Commissioner Clinch, Commissioner Lee and Commissioner McCray as present. Commissioners Melgar and Walker were initially noted as excused but a subsequent correction stated they were expected to attend later in the day.

Officials announced the closed session would begin at City Hall in Room 416 and then be moved to an undisclosed off-site location for candidate interviews. When the closed session portion is complete, the commission plans to reconvene in public at the Department of Building Inspection offices at 1660 Mission Street and vote on whether to disclose any or all of the closed-session discussions. The public reconvening at DBI offices was noted as not televised.

After the motion and second, the presiding officer asked whether all commissioners were in favor and recorded that the commissioners present voted in the affirmative; the commission recessed into closed session at 1:07 p.m. The meeting record indicated the action was taken to facilitate interviews and potential deliberations about filling the DBI director position. Any formal appointment or disclosure decisions will be made according to subsequent public reconvening and the commission’s stated vote on disclosure.
