DBI outlines permit-tracking rollout, major projects pipeline and QMatic schedule

Department of Building Inspection staff gave a series of operational updates on Feb. 15, 2012, covering the permit-tracking implementation, a large pipeline of major projects, the QMatic customer-queue system and other technology initiatives.
Penny Venable said the Accela-based permit and project tracking system is in analysis and prototype development and that configuration documentation is due in April, with historical-data conversion and a citizen-access subcommittee planned. "We're currently in the analysis stage, and the milestone for that is this month," Venable said.
Tom Huey summarized an influx of high-profile projects — including retrofits and large new developments — and estimated the pipeline would add roughly $1 billion in construction valuation; he said DBI needs additional staff and training to manage the workload and that safety and peer-review procedures will be used on major projects.
DBI also reported testing of online services for 3R requests, server consolidation work with the Department of Technology, a May target for a new cash-management rollout, and plans to activate QMatic in mid-to-late March after union consultation and staff training. The commission asked staff to continue monthly updates and to coordinate data sharing with other city agencies, including the Assessor-Recorder's office.
