The Building Inspection Commission reviewed ordinance 90,584, which would amend the San Francisco Building Code to require private commercial buildings to increase fluorescent lighting efficiency by 2011 and amend the Environment Code to require city facilities to follow the same standard. DBI staff said the Department of the Environment will help devise an implementation and tracking method and that electrical inspectors would be used for compliance work.
Commissioners raised the possibility of amending the ordinance to include language covering higher‑efficiency lighting technologies such as LED and cautioned about the disposal/recycling of replaced fixtures and lamps. DBI indicated it would work with the Department of the Environment and contractors to address disposal and recycling concerns. The commission moved to approve the ordinance; the roll‑call vote was unanimous.
Staff said compliance and outreach details and any available grant programs to assist building owners would be coordinated with the Department of the Environment during implementation.
