DBI says graywater plan checks expanding as PUC shares guidance

DBI plumbing staff updated the commission on graywater plan checks and coordination with the Public Utilities Commission (PUC). Chief Plumbing Inspector Steve Penelli said new inspectors are being trained and that the PUC will include DBI contact information in its public handout to help homeowners find plan-check guidance.
Penelli said DBI has seen roughly 10–15 requests for graywater systems this year and estimated that about 7–9 have been installed. He clarified that laundry-to-landscape systems do not always require a plan check unless they involve pumping, holding tanks or other mechanical components that change the installation's complexity.
Commissioners asked about design handouts and lists of contractors; DBI said it does not produce one-size-fits-all plans because every site is different and recommended contractors who both design and install graywater systems handle the work.
