SFUSD superintendent outlines reopening criteria, dashboard and launches bookmobile partnership

Superintendent Matthews updated the Board of Education on Oct. 6, 2020 about steps the district is taking to prepare for limited in-person instruction and to improve community access to learning resources during the pandemic.
Matthews said the district will prioritize preschool students and students with individual education programs (IEPs) in special day classes when moving toward Phase 2 reopening, and described two sets of criteria: items within district control (testing plans, facilities and staff training) and contagion-related factors beyond local control (community infection rates and contact tracing). She estimated that comprehensive COVID testing could cost “as much as $300 per month per person tested,” and said the district will publish a public dashboard of reopening indicators at the Oct. 20 board meeting and post it online thereafter.
Matthews also announced an SFUSD partnership with the San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) to provide a curbside pickup ‘‘SFPL To Go’’ bookmobile at several school sites and Treasure Island—scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays (2–6 p.m.) at Jose Ortega Elementary, Willie Brown Middle, John O’Connell High School, and Treasure Island on Wednesdays—allowing patrons to drop off and pick up library materials without entering buildings. Families must reserve materials ahead of time, and the service will be curbside only.
She introduced the return of SF Loves Learning, a district-created TV program for early learners produced with SF GovTV and KTVU Plus. The program is produced by SFUSD educators for pre-K through second grade and is intended to reach families with limited internet access.
In response to praise from board members and public commenters (including a Treasure Island resident), Matthews said staff will continue to work on logistics, provide follow-up information on tracking materials to families, and coordinate health and safety protocols as part of reopening planning.
