SFUSD board adopts five revised policies and approves consent items

The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education approved the consent calendar (with item 16 pulled for separate consideration) and adopted five revised policies after a rules committee recommendation.

Board action: The board passed the consent calendar by roll call after Commissioner Mulligan requested item 16 be pulled for separate voting. The board later took a separate roll call on item 16. The five policies approved in a single vote were updates intended to reflect recent state law changes and Department of Education guidance: Uniform Complaint Procedures (policy 1,312.3), Work Permits (5,113.2), Bullying (5,131.2), Nondiscrimination/Harassment (5,143.3), and protections added in the harassment policy (5,145.7).

Discussion: Commissioner Malaga asked about rates charged under certain legal services contracts and the selection of contractors; Danielle Haupt (chief counsel) explained that rates are negotiated competitively, that specialized firms handle immigration and communications work, and that one contractor was replaced this year due to a prior contractor taking a position in a union organization.

Why it matters: The policy updates clarify the district’s procedures on allegations, student safety and nondiscrimination at a time when district operations continue remotely. The consent calendar included routine approvals and budget-related items that will move forward as adopted.

Next steps: The severed item (item 16) was voted on separately and included additional clarifying discussion; staff will proceed with implementation of the adopted policies.
