Students and parents press SFUSD on graduation plans, equity and tech access

Student delegates and parent advisory representatives used the May 12 board meeting to press the district on student engagement, graduation plans and equity in remote learning, while public commenters recommended using district-affiliated radio for graduation coverage and highlighted local journalism accomplishments.
The student delegate reported that the 2020 student voice survey and the student delegate election were extended to May 20 and urged high school students to vote. The delegate said the SAC voted unanimously to pass an ERAF resolution developed with the Youth Commission and described virtual adjustments to the summer internship program.
Parent Advisory Council coordinator Michelle Jacques Magus (with parent Michelle Delaney) summarized challenges families face during shelter-in-place, commended the district for meal distribution and device access, and asked for earlier announcements about interpretation services at meetings so families know how to join translated sessions. PAC said it is recruiting members from underrepresented communities and will hold virtual meetings on May 13 and June 10.
In public comment Kevin Robinson, an educator and parent, urged SFUSD to use the radio station the district licenses (KOW 91.7 FM) to give graduating seniors airtime and to expand youth-focused programming on the station. A KALW representative also called attention to award-winning reporting and the station’s training programs.
Board members thanked PAC and the student delegates and asked staff to follow up on several items, including how parents can be involved in reopening planning and requests for additional details on technology and budget impacts.
