Dozens of community members and union leaders spoke at the Dec. 10 SFUSD meeting to support Buena Vista Horace Mann principal Claudia Dela Rios Moran and to request transparency about her removal.
Speakers included program partners, United Administrators of San Francisco representatives, elected office staff and parents who described the principal as a bilingual and bicultural leader who advanced restorative justice and trauma‑informed efforts at the school. "We urge you to keep her on," said a representative from Instituto Familiar de la Raza, who testified that the principal’s leadership fostered healing and collaboration amid community trauma.
Union co‑executive director Deborah Slava Burton said the union stood with administrators asking for reinstatement and clarity on the rationale for the personnel action. Carolyn Goosen, chief of staff to Supervisor Hillary Ronan, delivered city official support and called the principal an “extraordinary leader” whose removal has harmed the community.
Board members thanked community speakers and agreed to follow up; the superintendent offered to ensure appropriate staff follow‑up where needed. No formal personnel action was taken publicly during the meeting; personnel matters can proceed in closed session or follow personnel policy.
