Board elects new officers, accepts minutes and hears audit report in Jan. 14 meeting

The San Francisco Board of Education's Jan. 14 meeting included several routine and executive actions in addition to policy hearings.
Leadership: With no competing nominations, Vice President Mark Sanchez was nominated and confirmed as Board president by acclamation; Gabriela Lopez was nominated and confirmed as vice president by acclamation. Board members and student delegates offered brief remarks thanking outgoing leaders and welcoming the new officers.
Minutes and consent: The board approved the minutes from its Dec. 10, 2019 regular meeting by roll call.
Audit: Megan Wallace, chief financial officer, and the district’s auditors (Eide Bailey LLP) presented the FY 2018–19 audited financial statements. Auditors delivered a clean (unmodified) opinion on the financial statements, noted an audit adjustment related to pension reporting and identified three findings (one internal-control/pension reporting item and two state-compliance items). Staff said they brought unaudited actuals to the meeting and invited detailed budget questions to the Budget committee.
Closed session report: On return from closed session the board reported the following outcomes: by a 5–0 vote with two members absent, the board approved expunging the conduct record of one middle-school student; approved (5–0, two absent) a resignation agreement with one classified employee and authorized payment up to a stipulated amount; and approved settlement agreements in two pending matters (JT v. SFUSD and KJ v. SFUSD), authorizing payments up to the stipulated amounts. The board also provided direction to general counsel on anticipated litigation (DG v. SFUSD).
Next steps: The board will consider ratification of the Student Nutrition Services prepared-meal contract at its Jan. 28 meeting and requested staff to return with additional budget and audit detail as needed.
