Board approves renewal for Gateway Middle School charter after community support

Aaron Watson, Gateway’s principal, asked the board to consider Gateway’s demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and student leadership: "My hope is that we've been able to communicate Gateway's commitment to diversity, and inclusive practices, to equitable outcomes for all students," he said. Multiple students and parents described small class sizes, mentorship programs and the school's partnerships with community mental health organizations.
After public testimony the board took a roll call vote and approved the renewal petition. Commissioners noted Gateway's positive curriculum and the district curriculum and budget committees had provided favorable recommendations during prior reviews.
The vote authorizes the charter to continue under the requirements set by state law and the district's conditions; staff will carry any conditions recommended in the district’s petition review, and the board asked staff to monitor implementation going forward.
