Board Approves Two Facility Namings, Honoring Longtime Educators

Assistant Superintendent Han Fung read a resolution supporting the naming of the gym at James Lick Middle School for Raymond Ray Ponce, noting his service at the site from 1968 to 2003 and work creating student opportunities. Speakers from the James Lick community, including Norm Maddox and other parents and alumni, described Ponce’s decades of mentoring and coaching. The board approved the naming by roll call.
The board also considered a recommendation from the early-education department to name the 20 Cook Street auditorium for Lisa Reynolds Moore, who served SFUSD for more than 30 years as a paraeducator, teacher and principal and was described as devoted to the Bayview community. Assistant Superintendent Minu Yashar read the resolution; several early-education staff and family members testified in support, including Eli Horn; the board approved the naming by roll call.
Both actions were presented as district-conducted naming processes consistent with board naming policy and included plans for signage and a commemorative plaque. No formal opposition was recorded on the items' public-comment periods.
The board's approvals will allow district staff and school communities to proceed with signage and commemorative installations subject to district naming policy procedures.
