SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Unified School District board voted on Dec. 11 to rename the Nourse (Norris) Auditorium at 275 Hayes Street the Sydney Goldstein Theatre, honoring the late founder of City Arts and Lectures and her role in renovating the theatre for public use.
Commissioner Emily Morase read the resolution recounting Goldstein’s contributions to arts programming and the $2 million renovation she helped oversee. Supporters who spoke at the meeting included arts leaders, City Arts and Lectures partners, Sydney Goldstein’s family members and scholarship recipients. Sandra Halliday, an arts advocate, told the board that City Arts and Lectures is “a treasure” and that the partnership with the district is a valuable community asset.
Judge Vince Chhabria and other speakers recalled Goldstein’s decades of service and her role in returning the auditorium to public life. The board approved the resolution to rename the auditorium (vote recorded: majority recorded as 6 ayes in roll call). The resolution noted most costs for renaming would rely on private funding and that the renaming would not preclude future changes as required by the district’s educational mission.
