SFUSD honors 47 National Board Certified Teachers; district highlights teacher leadership

The San Francisco Unified School District honored 47 teachers who hold National Board Certification during its Feb. 13 meeting, recognizing recertifying teachers and previewing an April 17 commendation event.
Chief Academic Officer Brent Stevens said NBCT certification is a rigorous process "that represents the pinnacle of achievement in the teaching profession" and reported that roughly 8% of SFUSD certificated staff are NBCTs compared with about 3% nationally. He noted the district supports candidates through program coordinators and the Office of Professional Learning and Leadership.
Program coordinators Sarah Saldanha and Nia Ross introduced the honorees and invited them to receive pins and a group photo; several recertifying teachers spoke about collaborative support networks and encouraged other educators to pursue certification.
Stevens and staff described NBCTs' leadership roles in sites and district offices and cited research that students of NBCTs make greater learning gains on average. The board thanked honorees and encouraged continued support for teacher development.
