KALW general manager announces departure; board hears station's educational role

KALW General Manager Matt Martin told the San Francisco Board of Education on Feb. 13 that he will step down from his role and outlined the station’s contributions to SFUSD’s educational mission, including student internships, classroom audio education and community reporting projects.
Martin said KALW has expanded opportunities for SFUSD students — including summer internships and in‑class audio journalism curricula at Burton and Galileo — and has partnered with community groups on programs such as America SCORES Bay Area and the San Quentin Report. "We broadcast these meetings, and that serves the parents and staff and the whole range of people who care about public education in San Francisco," he said.
Martin urged the board to support creating a 501(c)(3) friends organization to provide sustained development capacity, saying a stronger development effort is the station’s primary long‑term need. Board members thanked Martin for 16 years of service to the station and discussed options for strengthening the station’s financial base and exploring its role in a proposed SFUSD arts center.
The board acknowledged KALW’s educational partnerships and the station’s role as a community asset; district staff and commissioners said they will consider ways to support continuity as the district recruits a new leader for the station.
