The San Francisco Unified School District board approved the 2018–19 Public Education Enrichment Fund (PEAF) expenditure plan (item 182-227 SP1) at its March 13 meeting after community advisory committee input and public comment.
Kathy Fleming, director of PEAF, presented the spending plan developed with the PEAF Community Advisory Committee and described it as a continuation of baseline staffing and programming with adjustments for salary and benefits. Community speakers asked the board to prioritize translation and interpretation services and funding for new Arabic and Vietnamese language pathways; Julie Roberts Fung (representing Vietnamese-language school interests) requested confirmation the plan includes staffing allocations to launch these language programs.
Board members acknowledged the requests and discussed process and timing; staff said PEAF CAC recommendations inform future agendas and that some recommendations will require prioritization and additional funding sources. The item was moved and seconded and adopted by roll call (recorded as five ayes). The board noted that the plan may be amended during city fund allocations and that staff would continue to work with community advocates to refine implementation.
The vote authorizes spending under the PEAF plan for the 2018–19 school year; commissioners asked staff for follow-up on specific items and indicated interest in hearing updates on language-pathway implementation and PFCAC engagement.
