Commission agrees to agendize citywide subcommittee on tall-building design after earthquake-engineering briefing

Following a reportback from an earthquake-engineering conference, commissioners agreed to agendize formation of a multi-agency subcommittee to address tall-building design, coordination with planning, fire, homeland security and the engineering community.
Several commissioners reported attending the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research meeting and urged a coordinated, citywide approach to tall-building design and short-term administrative guidance. One commissioner recommended forming a subcommittee that would include DBI, planning, the fire marshal, homeland security and community representatives to bring a unified set of concerns and recommendations to the commission.
Commissioners agreed to agendize the proposal, to consult the city attorney about committee formation and to include the item at a future meeting so the commission can consider membership and charter. Commissioners emphasized they do not intend to duplicate technical work by engineering groups but want to ensure planning, public-safety and community impacts are integrated with engineering guidance.
Staff acknowledged prior joint discussions with planning and said they will place the subcommittee formation on the next agenda for further action and possible appointments.
