Department of Elections outlines program to preregister 16- and 17-year-olds in SFUSD

Jill Fox of the San Francisco Department of Elections briefed the board on efforts to preregister 16- and 17-year-old students and an elections-ambassador program that trains students to lead voter-registration events on campuses.
Fox described the state policy allowing preregistration at 16 and said the department is partnering with the San Francisco Youth Commission to encourage preregistration in all San Francisco high schools. The program will train student ambassadors to register and preregister peers during voter-education weeks in April; students do not need to be 16 to participate as ambassadors. Fox asked the district to place an item on a future board agenda for updates on the board’s prior resolution (16223) and invited SFUSD staff to collaborate on program development.
The board accepted the update; no questions were asked at the meeting, but Commissioner Norton noted she had asked the curriculum committee chair to schedule a future update.
