SFUSD board adopts parental involvement compact and policy protecting undocumented students

The San Francisco Unified School District board on Feb. 14 approved two policy items: a parental involvement policy and parent compact for Civic Center Secondary to meet Title I obligations, and an amended board policy intended to protect the rights of undocumented students.

Elise Castro read the requested action for the parental involvement policy and compact, which the staff said fulfilled Title I requirements for Civic Center Secondary. With no public comment on the item, the board approved the requested action in a roll-call vote.

General counsel Danielle Howe presented recommended redline edits for a separate policy (board policy 51-45-10) to align the district’s language with board direction to protect undocumented students. Howe told the board that staff suggested minor revisions, including references to an earlier resolution passed in February 2007 and language clarifying protections for undocumented students. The board approved the policy as amended in a recorded roll-call vote.

Board members remarked these policies clarify the district’s commitments to parent engagement in Title I schools and to protecting the rights of students regardless of immigration status. The actions were taken during the board’s regular meeting and will be reflected in the district’s published policies and Title I documentation.

What happens next: Staff will update the district’s policy manuals and Title I materials and implement the parental involvement compact at Civic Center Secondary. The adopted protections for undocumented students will be applied according to the policy language adopted by the board.
