Commissioner Morase introduced Resolution 1612‑13a1 requesting that SFUSD encourage curriculum and field trips related to the recently opened Korean War Memorial in the Presidio. The resolution called on district history and social science teachers to incorporate the Korean War into syllabi and encouraged staff to apply for a teacher training program that could fund teacher travel and deepen classroom instruction.
Don Reid, John Stevens and Judge Quentin Kopp (President of the Korean War Memorial Foundation) spoke in favor of the resolution, citing the memorial's educational value and the importance of teaching about the war. Speakers noted the memorial opened on Aug. 1, 2016, and urged the district to support teacher training and student visits.
Before the vote Commissioner Morase and board members corrected an inaccurate reference: the National Council for the Social Studies teacher training cited in the draft would take place in 2018 in Washington, D.C., not at the Marines Memorial in San Francisco in 2017. The board amended the resolution for accuracy and adopted it by roll call (vote announced as 6 ayes).
