SFUSD adopts gender‑inclusive restroom and dress‑code resolution

The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education adopted a resolution Aug. 23 requiring single‑stall restrooms be designated and signed as all‑gender and directing the district to prioritize all‑gender restroom facilities in future construction and modernization.
Authored by Board President Matt Haney, the resolution also calls for gender‑neutral dress codes for schools and school events (including graduation and prom), and states that students and staff are not required to obtain a court order to be addressed by names and pronouns that correspond to their gender identity.
The proposal cited local and national data on harassment of transgender students and referenced SFUSD Administrative Regulation 51.45.63 on restroom accessibility. During debate the board accepted amendments to require outreach through Parent Advisory Council, Student Advisory Council and other groups and to explicitly acknowledge medical conditions as a reason for using single‑stall restrooms. Rob Geller, a parent and Board of Education candidate, urged the board to also note that students with gastrointestinal disorders may have urgent needs; the board added language to include medical conditions.
Interim Superintendent Lee and multiple commissioners framed the resolution as an implementation of existing policy and local leadership on student safety and inclusion. The board approved the resolution by roll call.
