Board adopts physical-education policy; staff to review independent-study PE options

The San Francisco Board of Education on Tuesday adopted a comprehensive physical-education and activity policy that sets PE instructional minutes to match state law (200 minutes per 10 school days for elementary grades, 400 minutes per 10 school days for grades 7'12) and encourages PE at kindergarten levels.
Under Board Policy 61.42.7, the district incorporated AB 11391'related provisions allowing use of the uniform complaint process for instruction-minute complaints and authorized, for the 2016'17 school year only, limited PE independent study in defined circumstances: students in three-year career pathways, students in alternative schools of choice and students at continuation or county programs. The policy requires staff to return with a comprehensive analysis and recommendation about granting PE credit in those alternative programs for subsequent years.
The district's chief academic officer, Brent Stevens, told the board staff could begin the validation work when schools reopen and expected to have an analysis back to the curriculum committee in roughly four to eight weeks. Several board members emphasized concern that PE remain a core in-school subject and asked that staff explore ways to provide required minutes within the school day where possible.
The measure passed unanimously.
