Board unanimously renews three 5 Keys charter petitions serving justice-involved students

The San Francisco Unified School District board voted Jan. 26 to grant renewal petitions for three charters operated by the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department under the 5 Keys umbrella.
District staff read findings and recommendations under California Education Code Section 47607 and 47605(b). The board considered public testimony and trustees’ comments about the role of these programs in serving students who require alternative placement or reengagement supports. Commissioner Wynne said the 5 Keys schools “meet what I think should be the criteria for a charter school” because they serve students the regular system cannot.
Roll-call votes were recorded for each renewal and the measure passed unanimously. Board members asked staff to continue monitoring program performance and compliance under the terms of each charter.
Next steps: The superintendent and staff will ensure renewal conditions are implemented and that program reports continue to be provided to the board and relevant committees.
