Board asks staff to develop equitable, sustainable student transportation plan

The San Francisco Unified School District Board unanimously adopted a resolution requesting district staff to pursue strategies for equitable, healthy and sustainable student transportation.
Vice President Matt Haney and Commissioner Mendoza McDonald, who co‑authored the resolution, said the plan should prioritize walking, bicycling, public transit and other active transportation modes that benefit student health while reducing traffic congestion and emissions. The resolution asks the district to develop a comprehensive transportation plan, expand safe routes to school, designate staff to coordinate transportation efforts and promote the city's free muni for youth registration among SFUSD students.
The resolution also directs the transportation department to give preference to zero‑emission vehicles when renewing bus contracts where the technology is price competitive and not operationally detrimental, and to engage with city partners on district‑wide street‑safety and bicycle education curricula.
Board members cited recent traffic incidents involving students as a reason to advance the measures and asked staff to coordinate with the mayor's office and city agencies; the resolution passed on roll call.
