SFUSD pulls proposed PerkSpot employee benefit for further legal review

A proposed memorandum of understanding with PerkSpot, a for‑profit company offering employee discount services, was withdrawn from the Aug. 11 consent calendar after several commissioners raised questions about data privacy, solicitation and the three‑year term.
Daniel Menezes (HR oversight) and a staff representative described PerkSpot as free to the district and opt‑in for employees, offering discounts on gym memberships, phone plans and local merchants. Staff said the tentative agreement would not provide district‑wide employee contact lists and that employees who opted in would register with their SFUSD e‑mail addresses.
Commissioner Wynne (Wins) and others pressed staff on whether PerkSpot could sell or use employee information, how the company would solicit users, cancellation terms, and whether labor partners had been consulted. District counsel and staff said the MOU would be reviewed by legal counsel and could include language requiring an opt‑out or 30‑day cancellation; general counsel recommended bringing the item back after further review and consultation with labor partners.
The superintendent said the item would be pulled from the agenda and brought back as a new item after staff completes additional checks. The board did not adopt the PerkSpot MOU at this meeting.
