Multiple Civic Center Secondary teachers, students and partner-service providers spoke during public comment to protest the district’s apparent plan to reassign substantial portions of the school’s space to other uses.
Speakers described threatened losses including the library, computer lab used for online instruction, auditorium, music studio and three small confidential rooms used for therapist and case‑manager meetings. Staff say those rooms are essential to support students with complex trauma, mandated clinical services and the intensive special‑education supports Civic Center provides.
A Civic Center student asked, "If you take our auditorium, where are you gonna have our circle time for advisory? If you take our wellness, where are we going to see the nurse? If we need to meet with our therapist, where can we go for privacy?" Teachers and counselors warned that short notice and lack of consultation undermined the school’s ability to serve students and requested that the district preserve the core instructional and confidential spaces or consult the community about alternative solutions.
District staff present were asked to work with the school community to clarify the plans and find alternatives; the board was told many stakeholders had left earlier because of the late hour but urged to consider the school’s specialized needs before reallocating space.
